Toruń was established in 1233 under the founding charter issued by the Great Teutonic Knight Hermann von Salza and preceptor Hermann Balk. In 1454, king Casimir Jagiellon placed Toruń on the map of the Republic of Poland. Presented with the royal statute by king Alexander Jagiellon, liberated by General Józef Haller's army in 1920, Toruń is one of Poland's most valuable historical sites that has been entered on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Toruń, a candidate for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016, is celebrating its 777th anniversary in 2010.
